(singular: mage)

todo derogatory names/aliases for magi

Magi are individuals capable of intentionally or unintentionally manipulating the Æther Field (wielding ‘Sentia’), or communing with magic. This capability is believed to be genetic, though the precise biological mechanism remains unknown. This belief comes from a strong correlation between an individual’s aptitude with magic and a family history of the like.

Magical ability can seemingly be inherited, diminished, or lost across generations. Not all descendants of magi possess casting ability, and aptitude varies significantly between individuals. Individuals have also been known to demonstrate magi abilities even when there has never been any recorded family history of aptitude.

Magi exist across all cultures, races, and social classes in Primitia. Though it is worth noting they are overrepresented in the lower classes. There is no single phenotype or demographic marker associated with magical capability. Magi make up only between approximately 5-10% of the population.

Because of magic’s potential dangers, magi of all types are carefully tracked and monitored by the government. Regardless of classification, all magi are required to register with the government and are marked by special traces placed on their ledgers.
